Which Businesses Need Pallets? More Than You Might Think

Ethan

Pallets are one of those things most people don't think about until they need them — and then they realise they need a lot of them, quickly.

The truth is, pallets sit at the centre of almost every industry that deals in physical goods. If your business makes, moves, stores or ships anything with weight and volume, pallets are almost certainly part of your operation — or they should be.

Here's a look at the types of businesses we supply, and why pallets matter in each.

Warehouses and Distribution Centres

This is the most obvious one. Warehouses run on pallets. Stock arrives on them, gets stored on them in racking, picked from them, and shipped back out on them. Without a reliable pallet supply, the whole operation grinds to a halt.

Warehouses typically need:

  • High volume at a consistent price point
  • Grade B pallets for general racking and movement
  • A supplier who can fulfil repeat orders without long lead times

For distribution centres handling mixed stock, having a relationship with a local supplier — rather than relying on pallets coming back in with deliveries — gives you control over your own stock levels.

Manufacturers

Manufacturers use pallets at both ends of their process. Raw materials arrive on them. Finished goods leave on them. In between, they're used to move work-in-progress around the factory floor.

The challenge for manufacturers is that pallet consumption can be hard to predict — a big production run means more outbound pallets, and if customers don't return them, you're constantly topping up.

We supply manufacturers across Hampshire and the South Coast with Grade B and Grade C pallets for production use, and Grade A where goods are going direct to retail.

Retailers and Wholesalers

Retailers receive deliveries on pallets and often don't have a use for them once the stock is unpacked. That creates two opportunities: they need a supplier for any pallets they do use (display pallets, back-of-house storage), and they often have surplus pallets to clear.

Wholesalers, meanwhile, typically need a steady supply of pallets for outbound deliveries to their own retail customers — and Grade B is usually the right call here.

Food and Drink Producers

Breweries, food manufacturers, soft drink producers — anyone making consumables that ship in bulk quantity needs pallets, and they often need the right grade.

For food businesses, hygiene matters. Grade A pallets are often required where pallets come into contact with food products or go into cold storage. ISPM-15 certified pallets are needed for any export. And because food supply chains move fast, having local stock available at short notice is essential.

Builders Merchants and Construction

Builders merchants move heavy materials — bricks, blocks, tiles, bagged aggregate — almost entirely on pallets. The loads are heavy, the pallets take punishment, and Grade B or C stock is usually appropriate because appearance doesn't matter.

Construction sites also use pallets for storing materials safely off the ground, particularly in wet conditions. These are typically one-way — the pallet doesn't come back, so cost per unit matters more than anything else.

Agricultural and Horticultural Businesses

Farms, nurseries and garden centres use pallets more than most people expect. Bagged compost, fertiliser, seed, produce — all of it gets moved on pallets. In horticulture especially, there's often a seasonal spike in demand that catches businesses out.

Agricultural pallets are typically Grade B or C. They take hard use in outdoor conditions and the appearance doesn't matter. Volume and price are the priority.

Logistics and Haulage Companies

Hauliers often need pallets for customers who don't have their own supply — either for backloads or because a collection job involves goods that need to be palletised before they can be moved.

Having a relationship with a local pallet supplier means you can source stock quickly when a job requires it, rather than turning work away or charging the customer a premium for emergency sourcing.

Recycling and Waste Management

Recycling operations handle bulk materials — scrap metal, plastics, cardboard, glass — that need to be stored and moved in quantity. Pallets provide the base for IBCs, bulk bags, and other containers. Grade C is usually sufficient here, and volume is the priority.

Events and Exhibition Companies

This one surprises people. Events companies use pallets as the base for display builds, stage structures, and temporary installations. They're cheap, stackable, and strong enough for most display purposes.

For this type of use, Grade C pallets are ideal — they're functional, low cost, and the appearance doesn't matter once they're dressed.
